BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 5th

Some bits and bobs to get us started:

1. The nominations for the executive committee of the Men’s Bowling Committee closed at 12 noon on Saturday September 5th, and Returning Officer Paul Rubie has declared that it is not necessary to organise an election for any position. Paul will report the result of nominations at the AGM.
2. And bowling members are again reminded that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held at 11am on Sunday September 13th.
3. Due to the illness of Ash Lewis, the final of the Major Pairs Championship has been postponed to a date to be fixed. Ash is now at home convalescing and we all wish him a full recovery into strong health.
4. Nominations for the BBC Major Singles Championship are still open for anyone who has not yet had time to get listed. You have until 5pm Saturday September 12th to get your name on the schedule in this most prestigious event.
5. All members are reminded that the AGM of the BBC Ltd, the licenced club, will stage its AGM in October and you are urged to attend. It is understood that there are to be information sessions in the lead up to the AGM, and it would be helpful for all members to get to at least one of the sessions. It will be important that all members to hear the details of the functioning of the Club at this time so that informed decisions can be made.
6. The next meeting, and last for the outgoing 25/26 Men’s Bowling Committee, will be held at 10.30am on Wednesday September 9th. Draft minutes will be posted prior to the AGM on Sunday.

Saturday Social Bowls

Twenty-two bowlers turned out for a roll, and found that they had to wrestle with gale force westerly winds that battered the Waratah Green for most of the afternoon. In short, it was a shocker!!

In a pairs game on rink 8, the evergreen Gordon Lewis and son Greg notched up a single on the first end against Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Al McGhee but then found themselves 1 – 7 down after five. However, they then started to get themselves to within measuring distance of the jack and closed to 7 all after ten. From that point though, Graham and Al  weathered the conditions better and ran to the twenty-first solid winners at 24 – 13.

On the next rink, Barry Werfel, Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman and Terry Norwood, though really struggling in the gale, led 6 – 1 over Peter Hall, visitor Kirk Kirk and an exasperated Chris Forrester after four ends, but had the lead trimmed to one shot three ends later. From there however, with Barry and Richard managing the conditions quite well, Terry’s trio set sail and stormed off into the distance. When stumps were pulled, 35 – 10 was the damage.

On rink 10, Mark Barrow, Mick ‘king’ Fisher and Ross ‘Seville’ Barber absolutely crushed Peter Marshall, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Mick Flynn to lead 17 – 1 after nine and it was time to call for divine intervention. Nope, there was no intervention of any kind around, so the pounding continued through the back half. Every time that Mick’s team managed to get near, Ross’ trio responded mercilessly, triumphantly . . . 34 – 9 was how it ended.

In the last game, Graeme ‘stirred’ Bond, Graham Hartnup and Bob Edwards blitzed the opening ends against Arnie ‘dickie hip’ Lenczuk, Charles Coode and the redoubtable Robin Staples to lead 10 – 0 after five ends and then 14 – 1 after ten! Either rolling those black ones into the head, or using that favoured bit of weight to steal shot, Bob was in his element! Things didn’t change in the back half, and when time was called, team Edwards was 24 – 6 to the good.

 

Coach’s Corner No 10  by Robin Staples

So going back to the first Coach’s Corner, the “role of the lead”.

Second paragraph says, “Deliver jack as close as possible do a distance determined by the skip”.

Last time we covered the grip. There is another page in The Manual about delivering the jack. Without covering the grip again I will add the other content;

The delivery of the Jack is consistent with the delivery employed for the draw shot. Follow the same principle of feet, grip, stance, bend, step and deliver.

The delivery of the Jack. Teach your players that the delivery is a pendulum action of the arm. The palm of the hand should follow the jack in a natural follow through. Delivery may include varying length of backswing depending on the player.

Release. The jack should be released when the arm is slightly in advance of the front foot (approximately 15 to 20cm), assisting the player to deliver/release the jack smoothly out of the hand onto the green without dropping or dumping onto green.
