Weekend 19/20th January

On Sunday 20th January the Grade 2 Pennant trial players visited Austral Bowling Club.  I have not heard a result but will post it if I do hear.  The teams selected were as follows with lead first and skip last.

Paul Leverett     David Coltman     Josh woodcock   Mick Spong

Neil Fraser    Nathan Boyers     Jim Neely      Dugald Braithwaite

Carl Spilker     Dennis Beatty     Stephen Della     Mick Armstrong.

Two trial games were also held on Saturday.  Results are shown below but are of interest only as the skips were changed during the game.  it was good to see the Chairman of Selectors watching the matches.  Talking to him after the game it appears likely that we will only be fielding two pennant teams this year as we do not have sufficient names on the board.  This would be a shame to see the Club lose a pennants team.  Announcements do not seem to have much effect so I suggest that if you read this post you talk to all and every member who does not have his name down for pennants and try and pursuade them to put their name down.  We only need a few more names and we can field three teams..

Kevin Jones     Richard Denman     Don Coleman     Mick Flynn 15 lost

Peter Watson     Rick Reynolds     Owen Williams     Peter Morales  20

Glen Giese     Carl Spilker     Bob Edwards    Gordon Lewis  23 lost

Brian Payne     Graham Hunt     Bill Meredith     Robin Staples  24

In the social game,  Joel Hunt, Paul Rubie and John Cummins played Keith Edwards, Barry Werfel and Bill Pope.  Result is too faint to read but it looks like a close match.

Working Bee

This last Sunday, 13th January 2019 was the day that Bowral Bowling Club was having a Working Bee.  Designed to save the Club precious money on some smaller jobs and to smarten up the Club and playing areas.  Sad to say the turn up was very poor.  I counted nine members, though there may have been others tucked away doing some jobs.  As usual the Board members, who already do an huge amount of work on behalf of the Club and it’s members outnumbered the members present!

Howard Lewis was busy mending a hole in the toilet wall while stalwarts Bob Kennett and Billy Dodwell attended to the BBQ.  Most of the others present, Board members, Bowls Secretary and Kevin Jones were smartening up the rink markers.  So maybe next time you are playing and see how smart the greens are looking you might consider whether you could not lend a hand for a couple of hours next Working Bee

Welcome Back

I hope all Bowral Bowling club members have had a great Christmas and 2019 has started as you would wish the rest of the year to continue.

The Club activities for 2019 are well under way with a return to Wednesday and Saturday social bowls and entries open for the early Club events.

The most important of these is the Bowral Club Championship Singles event.  Probably the most prestigious of the years events and the first to get under way.  The dates are posted below.  With entries closing on January 26th 2019 you are urged to get your entry in quickly.

The other two events on the board are The Chris Benton Memorial Shield and the Australia Day Barefoot Bowls.  The Chris Benton Fours closes on Friday 2nd February with the event taking place on Saturday the 9th February 2019.  Australia Bay Barefoot Bowls is on the 26th January and the Club hopes to mix our own bowlers with barefoot guests to provide an enjoyable day for everyone.  Notices of these two events are also posted below.

Finally details of a New Facebook Page have appeared on the notice board.  A copy of the details will appear below.  Join up to find out how the Bowral top team became the Bowral Bulls.

Happy Christmas

I would like to wish all Bowral Bowling club members and visitors to this site a very Happy Christmas and all the best in the New Year.  May 2019 be a great bowling year for all our members and an excellent vintage for us all.

The Saturday before Christmas the Mens Bowling Club hosted a Super Leaque Competition.  In a nutshell all players paid $12 green fees and $30 into a winners pool.  Three games of 9 ends were played.  Do not have a report on the event but twenty players was a good start to this new event.  The results are posted below.

In previous years (3) the bowlers who had  attended bowls most often and thereby contributed the most green fees were rewarded with a botle of wine for their contribution.  The recorder of these records is Glen Geise and we thank him for his efforts over the years.  These records are also very useful for tracking bowls attendance.  A copy of the top ten is attached below.  Glen has also taken over the Membership Registrars job keeping records of new members and forwarding this information the Bowls NSW.

Happy New Year to you all.

Aaron Teys

Sunday 16th December saw the Club honoured with a visit by Aaron Teys, World Champion of Champions Winner in 2017 and Australian Indoor Singles Winner in 2018.  Once again turn out was rather poor with most attendees being from the better bowlers in contrast to the previous day.  For those who did attend it was a most enlightening visit.  Aaron being an excellent speaker and happy to share his experiences with those present.  Seeing how quickly he summed up our green and delivered consistent bowls on the jack was an eye opener.  Alex Matheson travelled from Camden with two young ladies from the Camden Youth Bowls Academy who also showed their bowling skills with Aaron.  So thanks to Aaron for sharing his wisdom and to Carl Spilker for organizing the day.

Charity Day

The Bowral Mens Bowling Club held the annual charity day competition on Saturday on the 15th December.  Proceeds from the day have been donated to the Cancer Council.  The Club hoped for a good turn out for such a worthy cause.  However, the response was disappointing with only 19 male bowlers attending.  The day was saved by all the Lady bowlers from the Ladies Club who joined in the event.  The day started at 10am with a spider (bowlers deliver one bowl from around the rink and nearest the centre wins) which was won by Joel Hunt.  Three rounds were then played for the Charity Trophy.  Three teams had three wins.  The runner up was the team of Keith Edwards, Anne Brenning and Bob Edwards while the winners were Joel Hunt, Peter Watson and Don Coleman.

The winners and runners up won bottles of wine with Joel Hunt also winning a bottle of whisky for his “spider win.

A new trophy was presented by Howard Lewis for the best new bowler.  New bowlers included bowlers who have started over the last three years and consideration was also given to their contribution to Club activities.  Clear winner with a win in the Club Championship Fours and being elected Vice Chairman of the Men’s Bowling Club was Carl Spilker.  Winner of the Henselite bowls bag which had been raffled to raise money was Bob Edwards. Also our thanks for our excellent BBQ cookers, for this event and many others, Billy Dodwell and Bob Kennett.
