Major Pairs Championship
In the first of the games Graham Hartnup and Dave Charlesworth won two of the opening three ends to lead 3 – 1 against Ash Lewis and Alastair McGhee and then felt the full brunt of Championship play as they were pummeled into submission. The experienced pairing of Ash and Al were in good touch and were not about to show any mercy. Graham and Dave could get no traction whatsoever as Ash and Al relentlessly ground out the ends and handed them a bowling lesson. In fact, they could manage to snaffle only one more shot as their opponents kept up the pressure, end after end . . . after end. The final score to Ash and Al was 33 – 4.
In the other semi, Peter Flight and Bob Edwards leapt from the blocks against Graham Hunt and Terry Norwood with a massive SIX shotter on the first and then led 11 – 0 after three ends . . . what a start!! Finally catching their breath, Graham and Terry found the jack and ground out the next four ends, including a FIVE, to be only one adrift. With Peter in dominant form, he and Bob then slipped ahead again, only to have Graham and Terry peg them back to 15 all after eleven ends. In the back half, Peter and Bob were the much more consistent pair and more than matched anything thrown at them. Eight in front with three ends to play, they remained very steady and finished worthy winners at 31 – 24.
So members, the final of this prestigious event on Saturday September 5th will see Al McGhee and Ash Lewis pitted against Peter Flight and Bob Edwards. Can’t wait, this should be a beauty!

Coach’s Corner No 7
So going back to the first Coach’s Corner, the “role of the lead”
The first paragraph states “place the mat at the discretion of the skip”
Is this important? Well, it can give a team an advantage over an opposition. Not as much used as changing the length of the jack it can be used to maximise either long or short ends by moving the mat back to the T or forward to the white range mark. The jack then delivered to between the ditch and the far T will give maximum length and minimum length.
If the skip gives no advise on mat position, then leads may place the mat in a position that they feel they can then bowl to their optimum length. For skips, remember this is a little used aid to give you an advantage with long or short ends that you feel your team will perform better than your opponents. If your team is down and losing, use a dramatic mat position change to “shake the tree” and see if you can turn the tide.
