BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd
Some bits and bobs to get us underway:
- The Major Pairs Championship has seen the semi-finals completed and we now move to the final. This was set down for Saturday September 5th but now has been postponed due to the illness of Ash Lewis. We wish Ash a hasty recovery and will keep members posted on any decision about staging the final.
- Special thanks are due to our trusty handyman Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman for his latest assistance in producing erasers for our chalk scoreboards. Many thanks Don, you always step up to the plate and provide us with a high quality outcome. You’re a champ!!
- Members are reminded of the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club set down for Sunday September 13th at 11am. Also, members need to keep in mind that nominations for the committee close at noon on Saturday September 5th. If an election is required, returning officer Paul Rubie will be the man in charge.
- The AGM of the BBC Ltd will be conducted in October and members are advised that there will be information sessions offered prior to the meeting.
- The next major event will be the Club Singles Championship, and the draw for this will be conducted on Saturday September 5th. There should be some very classy bowls on view, so lets all make this one to remember.
- Members will be pleased to note that the Mittagong RSL has again agreed to support the Club’s RSL Shield, our popular fours competition over three weekends. No doubt last years winners Barb Wainberg, Dave Charlesworth, Gail Fraser and Mick Flynn will be looking for a repeat performance. November will be the time for all to flex their muscles . . . well, their bowling skill!!
- The next meeting of the Men’s Bowling Club committee will be held at 11am on Wednesday September 9th. This will be the last meeting for the year prior to the AGM. The minutes will be posted as soon as available.

Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-five eager bowlers turned out on a very mild but blustery day, so the Match committee sent six games of triples (one with swing lead) onto the Waratah Green.
On rink 7, Alex Christlo, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Neil ‘noisy’ Puckeridge notched up triples on the first two ends against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Paul Rubie and Terry Norwood, and then led 7 – 3 after six. Terry’s team then started to find the jack and by the thirteenth had levelled at 11s. However, Neil’s trio immediately cracked a FIVE, and then held on to take home the goodies at 20 – 17. On a tricky day, Alex was exceptionally solid for the victors with his wide swinging bowls.
In the next game, Mark Holdsworth was swing lead for Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt and Steve Day on the one hand and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Bob Edwards on the other. With Mark on the money for both teams, Joel and Steve led 5 – 2 after five ends, but, by the eleventh, Bob and Peter had edged in front 9 – 7. They then advanced this to 14 – 8 by the fifteenth and were all smiles until they conceded the last six ends and finished on the wrong end of a 19 – 14 score line. On a tricky day, newcomer Mark showed the others the way!!
On rink 9, Grahame Denman, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood and Viv ‘third’ Gear monstered Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham Hartnup and Ross ‘Seville’ Barber to lead 17 – 4 after nine ends and the smelling salts were being called for! Well something worked, because team Barber snapped the trend and edged back into the game! They more than matched team Gear in the home straight and were within six shots with four ends to play. However, the fairy-tale finish ended there as Viv’s team lifted a gear and made it to the clubhouse 24 – 20 to the good.
On the next rink, Barry Werfel, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Denis Lees belted Peter Marshall, Shane Harvey and Richard Denman at the start to lead 14 – 1 after eight ends! Oxygen to rink 10 please . . . and hurry! Well, something worked because team Denman cracked a four and were 6 – 17 on the eleventh and were filled with hope. Alas, hope wasn’t enough as Denis’ team grabbed the game by the throat and roared away leaving the opposition in the dust. The final score was 29 – 11 to Denis’ trio!
On rink 11, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Rowena Coode and the super optimistic Chris Forrester smothered Wal Markow, Barb Wainberg and Robin Staples from ‘go to whoa’!! More like ‘go to WOE‘!! 8 – 1 up after six ends Chris’ trio grabbed an EIGHT shotter on the seventh when the jack was struck and came forward!!??!! How’s that for luck . . or misery!! With no divine intervention, no oxygen or defibrillator, the annihilation continued end after tortuous end!! When cries for mercy were answered after twenty ends the count was 30 – 4. Ooooh, ouch!!
In the last game, there was more blood-shed as Arnie Lenczuk, Neville Tanner and Mike ‘fish’ Hook netted the first five ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Mark Shelvey and Joe O’Donnell, including a juicy SIX, to lead 13 – 0!! Five ends later it was 25 – 2, and one team was on the ropes and floundering! Taking deep breaths, team O’Donnell dug in and managed to get enough ink on the scorecard on the run home for double figures. Overall though, the gap was a wide one, and Mike’s team had the bragging rights at 33 – 10.
Coach’s Corner No 8
So going back to the first Coach’s Corner, the “role of the lead”
Second paragraph says, “Deliver jack as close as possible do a distance determined by the skip”.
A long time ago, even before my time, new bowlers having their first lessons, were not allowed to touch a real bowl until they had had six or so lessons on delivering the jack. Reasoning was that they would start playing as leads and they needed to deliver the jack to the position indicated by the skip.
Times have changed, instant gratification and time and money constraints mean that these days beginners lessons are very much briefer and new bowlers may never have rolled a jack when they play their first game.
So if you are new to the game and having difficulty with delivering the jack straight and to the indicated length, grab a whole spare bucket of jacks and spend an hour just practicing with these jacks. More information on how to achieve this in the next “corner”.
