BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to get our heads around first up:
- Another reminder that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held at 11am on Sunday September 13th, and it would be helpful to see a solid roll-up.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee is open for nomination so anyone aspiring to be a member of the group for the next twelve months has a couple of weeks to be nominated. To be eligible, you need to be a paid up member of the Men’s Bowling Club.
- The minutes of the latest meeting of the Men’s Bowling Committee executive are due to be posted on the notice board asap. Any member needing clarification of issues can talk with a member of the current committee, Terry Norwood, Peter Flight, Chris Forrester, Ted McPhee, Graham Hunt, Robin Staples, Ian Duncan, Richard Denman or ex officio Gordon Lewis.
- And, fair warning bowlers . . . the Committee executive has decided to re-institute the tax on wrong bias bowls!! The tax will be collected after the game by the biggest and ugliest of the committee members . . . who said Donald Trump has nothing to offer!?! The amount of the tax is to be decided . . . or we might just leave it to Mr Ugly. Be warned bowlers, the far right crackdown on wayward bowls is on its way!!
Major Pairs Championship
The last of the quarter final matches in this prestigious competition was played on Wednesday when Ted McPhee and Chris Forrester took to the green against Peter Flight and Bob Edwards. The conditions were fine, although the breeze kept moving around to keep the bowlers on their toes. Although they dropped a single on the first of twenty-one ends, Bob and Peter were soon in control and pushed out to 11 – 1 after seven. Both were drawing well and getting the better of their opposite. However, Chris and Ted then found some form and by the eleventh had reduced the deficit to six. The margin then blew out to ten shots, but by the eighteenth, it was back to six. It was then that Bob and Peter struck the fatal blow, a FIVE shotter, and when they bagged a four on the last, they were all smiles at 27 – 15. So, Bob and Peter progress to the semi where they’ll take on Graham Hunt and Terry Norwood, and a note to semi-final bowlers, both games have been pushed back one week and will be played on Saturday August 29th.
Wednesday Social Bowls
In a pairs game on rink 7, Shane Harvey and Terry Norwood dominated the opening against Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Ian Duncan to lead 10 – 1 after seven ends, but then dropped consecutively a FIVE and four! From there it was all one-way traffic, with it being all Neville and Ian in the back half. 27 – 18 was the final score.
In the next game, Mark Holdsworth, Paul Rubie and Steve Day won six of the first seven ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Wal Markow and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman, but by the tenth trailed by two! They regained the lead in the lead by the fifteenth, but Richard’s trio won five of the remaining ends to get home by a shot 19 – 18 in a thriller!
On rink 10, Graham ‘stirred’ Bond, Col Stone and the evergreen Gordon Lewis started strongly against Brian Bailey, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood and Ross ‘trim’ Barber to lead 9 – 2 after six, and then ,showing no mercy, ground the opposition into the rink! The back half was no different, and the cobbler’s team steamed home to 25 – 10.
In the next one, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Owen Williams and Viv ‘top’ Gear led Grahame Denman, Charles ‘morse’ Coode and Dave Charlesworth 4 – 3 after five ends, but by the eleventh, trailed 6 – 8. Viv’s team the regained their mojo to retake the lead, and in a close battle down the home straight held on to win by three at 18 – 15.
On rink 12, Barry Werfel, Rowena Coode and Joe O’Donnell started the better against Alex Christlo, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Neil ‘rowdy’ Puckeridge until they dropped an horrendous, eye- watering SEVEN shotter on the eleventh. However, they steadied, regained the lead and looked home until they dropped an awful SIX and went under 20 – 23!
In the final game, Peter Hall, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and dasher Clive Neutze were much the stronger at the start against Arnie Lenczuk, Graham Hartnup and Charles Stewart to lead 11 – 5 after eight, and when they added a SIX on the twelfth, they looked good, However, Charles team hit back, and with three ends to play led by one. Not done, Clive’s boys fired up and got home by two shots in a great game.
